Software Development
Compare coding agents by repository context, execution permissions, reviewable diffs, and actual test coverage.
Developers, engineering leads, and platform teams evaluating AI-assisted software delivery.
How to choose AI software for software development
Start with the output you need, then compare work surface, repository authority, validation, provider and cost. This guide groups 10 sourced profiles and 2 task guides; capability claims, commercial terms and professional requirements still need the checks shown below.
Start with a task
What to check before you choose
Work surface
Distinguish IDE or terminal work, GitHub cloud tasks, and container-based execution.
Repository authority
Check editable files, terminal commands, network access, secrets, and remote credentials.
Validation
Require a reproducible issue, meaningful acceptance tests, and inspectable commands rather than a generated success statement.
Provider and cost
Check model access, included usage, remote processing, local hardware, and additional service costs.
Find a fit for your workflow
Default: search match priority, or documented detail then name. No popularity scores.
Dify is a visual platform for agentic workflows, retrieval pipelines, tools, and model connections, with managed cloud and private deployment options. Its reviewed page describes a Community Edition as source-available under an Apache-2.0-derivative license, so self-hosting and open-source labeling should be checked separately against the actual license.
Cline is an open coding-agent runtime available through an editor, terminal, desktop application, and SDK. The reviewed page describes coordinated file edits, terminal commands, Plan and Act modes, checkpoints, model-provider choice, and MCP extension, allowing developers to configure the execution and approval boundary themselves.
LangGraph is a low-level agent orchestration runtime for stateful workflows that combine deterministic code with model-driven steps. Its reviewed documentation describes persistence, streaming, memory, and human oversight, while the product page identifies the library as MIT-licensed and distinguishes it from LangSmith tracing and deployment services.
CrewAI provides a multi-agent framework organized around role-based Crews and stateful, event-driven Flows, plus a managed enterprise build/runtime offering. The reviewed documentation recommends a Flow as the application structure and a Crew for delegated collaborative tasks, so evaluation should separate framework behavior from the hosted control-plane features.
OpenHands provides a locally runnable agent GUI with documented Docker-based execution and configurable language-model providers. Its reviewed setup guide includes installation, repository mounting, provider selection, and local-model options; developers should isolate the project and inspect the sandbox boundary before assigning software work.
Skyvern builds browser agents for repetitive portal work such as collecting invoices, extracting structured data and filling forms. A user can define a task or configure a multi-step workflow through its cloud interface or developer tooling, then inspect recordings, screenshots and action explanations. Its official blog identifies Suchintan Singh as co-founder and CEO, and its site identifies Ikonomos Inc. as the operating company. It is included here as a founder-built specialist vendor; the reviewed sources do not establish that its current team is small. A self-hosted core is documented separately from the managed cloud and its additional services.
Aider is a terminal-based AI pair-programming tool that edits an existing Git codebase or helps start a new project with a selected language model. The reviewed page describes repository mapping, automatic Git commits, image or web context, and lint/test feedback, making the resulting changes reviewable through normal Git tooling.
Cursor is a coding-agent environment spanning desktop development, CLI use, cloud agents, and code review. The reviewed product and pricing pages describe repository-context work, parallel cloud execution, skills and MCP connections, and plan-specific usage controls, so evaluation should include both code correctness and the permissions used to run it.
GitHub Copilot combines IDE assistance, CLI work, code review, and a cloud coding agent integrated with GitHub repositories. The reviewed pages distinguish individual and organization plans, model availability, credits, and governance controls, making it useful for teams whose issues and pull-request review already run on GitHub.
Compare the tradeoffs
Put the selection into practice
- Use a disposable branch and one scoped issue.
- Configure repository instructions and permissions.
- Run build and acceptance tests.
- Inspect the diff and logs before accepting the result.
