AI workflow vs AI agent
Understand explicit steps, model decisions and the places where each belongs.
A workflow has defined structure
An automated workflow connects inputs, steps and outputs. An AI model may handle a particular step while explicit rules manage branching, retries and approvals. The whole system need not be autonomous.
Where an agent fits
An agent can sit inside a workflow and choose tools or intermediate actions within the allowed boundary. n8n’s official material explicitly combines agents with logic and code; Zapier Agents emphasizes configured teammates and app connections.
Comparing implementation choices
Explicit steps can help with predictable operations and reviewable failures. Model-selected steps can help when the path varies. Neither approach establishes reliable performance without evaluating your inputs.
Selection implications
Compare hosting, execution visibility, connector scopes, model costs and approval features. A general orchestration platform is not a finished store or creator workflow.
