What is Photopea?
Photopea is a specialist ai tool from Photopea for Product images. Photopea is a browser image editor with layers, masks, PSD support and a documented one-click AI background-removal command. Individuals, creators and small sellers can use it to prepare product cutouts, social graphics, presentation visuals or promotional layouts, then inspect and export the result themselves. The official workflow is File > Open, Select > Remove BG, then File > Export As > PNG. The editor also advertises replacing part of an image from a text description. Ivan Kutskir described himself as Photopea's only developer in a December 2017 creator post; that establishes an individual-developer origin, while current team size, legal operator and controlling ownership are unknown. Two original synthetic background-removal cases have been frozen for review but are not executed. This profile establishes no autonomous shop, publishing or payment workflow.
Best suited for
- Individuals, freelancers, creators and small sellers who want a browser editor for occasional product images and graphics, can use a mouse and keyboard, and will review the cutout and exported file before publishing.
- A pilot focused on first native photopea remove bg product cutout and real transparent-png fidelity; preparation only, using authorized image or design files, an intended graphic or product-image brief, and an explicit choice of editing tool. The documented Remove BG path starts with a file selected in the browser editor. Text-based replacement additionally uses a description of the replacement. The prepared pilot has two unchanged 512x512 RGB geometric fixtures: a teal bottle with cap and label, and a low-contrast mug with a narrow handle and real handle hole. They have not been imported into Photopea; reference masks are excluded from product inputs.
Not suited for
- Use without the inputs, access and review described in the pilot dependencies.
- The full image editor has many controls. The documented one-click route is short, but accurate composition, masking and exporting still require user review.
- Background removal can lose thin handles, retain a real hole as opaque background, or change a label, cap or colour. The prepared cases explicitly check those finite details; no natural-photo quality result is available.

Inputs and outputs
Inputs
Authorized image or design files, an intended graphic or product-image brief, and an explicit choice of editing tool.
Outputs
Documented outputs include edited image/design files, PSD documents and a PNG export for transparent background removal. A retained canvas preview does not establish a valid transparent file; inspect the actual downloaded PNG and alpha data. No first native Photopea result, download or measured outcome is available for the two prepared cases. Text-based replacement, manual healing, additional formats, batch use and natural-photo quality remain unmeasured.

A practical Photopea workflow
- Prepare the first native photopea remove bg product cutout and real transparent-png fidelity; preparation only fixture: One existing authorized synthetic 512x512 RGB bottle image: teal body, black cap, cream label with three dark marks, light-gray background. This is a finite geometric fixture, not a natural product photograph. Independent full/core/background reference masks remain evaluator-only.
- Check Photopea access through Browser editor, PSD and image file editing, Browser embedding and configuration API, Optional cloud storage access and confirm the selected feature’s actual permissions.
- Open only the frozen bottle input in official Photopea. Apply Select > Remove BG once, then export the first unedited result as PNG at original 512x512. Preserve the complete bottle, cap, cream label and three dark label marks; remove the surrounding background to real alpha transparency. Do not draw or supply a mask, move/resize the subject, repair pixels, add a new background or retry removal.
- Inspect a real first native transparent-PNG export with complete original subject and detail colors, unchanged source input/canvas and all six fixed checks satisfied. Actual failures and unknowns remain visible. Compare it against the source input and retain the output/action log.
- Run the boundary case: Open only the frozen mug image as a fresh document in the same official Photopea session. Apply the same default Select > Remove BG command once and export the first unedited PNG at original 512x512. Retain the body, stripe and thin handle, remove background visible through the handle hole as well as outside the mug. Do not redraw the handle, fill the hole, alter contrast, supply masks, repair pixels, add a background or retry removal. Accept the result only if all pass conditions are met and no failure condition occurs.
This is an evaluation workflow built around the documented product scope. Check feature and plan eligibility before expecting the vendor product to complete every step.
Setup and integrations
The editor is opened at photopea.com in a web browser; the official introduction recommends a large screen, precise pointing device and keyboard for comfort. Official ordinary-editing documentation says opened files are processed on the user's device. The embedding API separately describes optional third-party Dezgo configuration for Magic Replace and Remove BG, including a key and request URL. The current native Remove BG route, provider, network processing, model, credits and build must be observed separately and are unknown here. The 22 April 2024 Photopea 5.6 post is a dated release reference, not the recorded current native version.. Documented access methods: Browser editor, PSD and image file editing, Browser embedding and configuration API, Optional cloud storage access. Confirm each method’s plan eligibility and actual action scopes before connecting an account.
Access and setup steps
- Prepare an image you own or have permission to edit, and decide whether you need a product cutout or a broader design. Keep original files so visual details can be compared.
- Open the official browser editor and review current terms and any AI-specific account, advertisement, credit or provider notice. A large screen, mouse or stylus and keyboard make the full editor easier to use.
- Use File > Open to select the intended image. For the documented one-click route, choose Select > Remove BG; this profile has not established current free native-command availability.
- Inspect the subject outline, narrow features, holes, labels, colours and shadows against the original. A removed handle or altered product label can make an otherwise attractive cutout unsuitable for a listing.
- Use File > Export As > PNG when transparency is needed. Inspect the downloaded file, its dimensions and real alpha transparency before using it in a product page, social post or promotional layout. Save editable work separately when further design changes are expected.
- For the registered pilot, obtain the pending specific approval before importing either fixed synthetic input or invoking native AI. Each case permits only one Remove BG call and the first unedited 512x512 export; evaluator-only masks, manual repairs and quality retries are excluded.
Test access: public tool. Two Photopea Remove BG cases are prepared but not executed. Current explicit approval for the specific Photopea image import and first free Select > Remove BG action is pending; the frozen contract records terms acceptance, image upload and native AI use as unapproved. Read-only official-source review does not establish that the current native command is free of an account, terms, advertisement, credit or provider gate. Keep any such gate visible before advancing. Only the two original synthetic RGB inputs may enter the product; all reference masks remain evaluator-only. No native AI call, successful export, score, current model or current build is established by this profile. Open the official access or installation page ↗

First native Remove BG bottle cutout and original label/cap preservation Product case · not executed
Controlled input
One existing authorized synthetic 512x512 RGB bottle image: teal body, black cap, cream label with three dark marks, light-gray background. This is a finite geometric fixture, not a natural product photograph. Independent full/core/background reference masks remain evaluator-only.
Request
Open only the frozen bottle input in official Photopea.
Steps
- Before opening the product, record authorization and verify this complete frozen contract, all input/reference hashes and the measurement-script hash. Keep reference masks and previous product outputs outside all product uploads.
- In the actual official Photopea browser UI, record visible version/build information or mark it unknown. Use File > Open to load only the fixed RGB input, inspect the canvas and source layer, and retain a pre-action screenshot.
- Invoke the documented Select > Remove BG command once for this fresh source document. Retain actual UI notices, gate/error/completion state and action time. Do not upload references, select a replacement engine, use manual selection/brush/magic-wand/refine-edge, patch pixels, replace the input or retry removal to improve the outcome.
- From the unchanged result document use File > Export As > PNG > Save. Keep 512x512, original canvas/position and default unmodified cutout. Save the first native downloaded bytes at the fixed result path; record native export settings, before/after screenshots, download identity/hash and any failure. A preview/checkerboard screenshot is not a transparent-PNG artifact.
- Keep the exported bytes immutable. Measure against the pre-existing reference masks with the frozen script; report each region and each source-color group separately. Do not resize, align, re-encode or repair the output for scoring. Native workflow/provenance is checked separately from pixels.
Expected output
A real first native transparent-PNG export with complete original subject and detail colors, unchanged source input/canvas and all six fixed checks satisfied. Actual failures and unknowns remain visible.
Observable pass conditions
- The exact original input hash is unchanged, only that RGB image was supplied to the actual official native UI, and the retained evidence proves one first Select > Remove BG result followed by its unedited PNG export. No reference mask, previous product output, manual repair or unrelated external action was supplied/performed.
- The actual first downloaded native artifact is decodable PNG, exactly 512x512, with a stored alpha channel or PNG transparency data; decoded alpha has minimum <=10 and maximum >=245. Checkerboard visibility alone does not pass.
- Using all 262144 pixels without alignment, cropped exclusions or ignored edges, alpha>=128 foreground has IoU>=0.90 against the full frozen bottle reference mask.
- At least 95% of all frozen bottle-core pixels retain alpha>=245.
- At least 95% of the frozen exterior-background pixels have alpha<=10.
- In every pre-frozen source-RGB group within each foreground reference core, alpha>=245 coverage meets that region's fixed minimum fraction (95% bottle/body, 90% mug handle). Of those retained opaque pixels, at least 99% differ from the source RGB by at most 2 in every channel. All per-group numerators and denominators are reported; zero opaque pixels cannot pass. Transparent-pixel hidden RGB outside these cores is not scored.
Failure conditions
- The source, reference masks, thresholds or measurement code change after the first product call; the operator tunes or supplies a mask, repairs output, uses another engine/product, retries removal for quality, or substitutes an old output. This makes the run nonconforming, not passed.
- The first native result or export fails a fixed dimension/alpha/IoU/region/color condition. Preserve the actual artifact/error and individual failed checks; an overall average cannot hide a region failure.
- Missing native output, pending service work, unverified UI provenance or uncertain authorization remains explicitly unexecuted/incomplete/unverified. Do not invent an image, success claim or pass score.
Low-contrast mug, narrow handle and real hole boundary Product case · not executed
Controlled input
The unchanged distinct synthetic 512x512 RGB near-white mug on light-gray background, with a narrow handle, real background-colored handle hole and dark body stripe. The full/body/handle/hole/exterior masks existed before any Photopea call and remain evaluator-only.
Request
Open only the frozen mug image as a fresh document in the same official Photopea session.
A genuine unedited first native PNG with real hole/exterior transparency, preserved low-contrast mug/body stripe/narrow handle and all six fixed checks satisfied; lost handle or opaque hole remains a separately reported failure.

- The exact original input hash is unchanged, only that RGB image was supplied to the actual official native UI, and the retained evidence proves one first Select > Remove BG result followed by its unedited PNG export. No reference mask, previous product output, manual repair or unrelated external action was supplied/performed.

- Using every image pixel, alpha>=128 foreground has IoU>=0.90 against the full frozen mug reference including its handle and actual hole.
- At least 95% of mug-body-core and at least 90% of mug-handle-core have alpha>=245; both regional fractions are separately reported.
- At least 95% of the inset handle-hole and at least 95% of exterior-background have alpha<=10; both regional fractions are separately reported.

Commercial use: Official Terms Of Use say the user's work belongs to the user, may be sold without giving Photopea a share and need not mention Photopea. This does not verify source-image, font, trademark or optional third-party AI rights; no universal generated-output or provider-license certification is made.
Limitations and checks
- The full image editor has many controls. The documented one-click route is short, but accurate composition, masking and exporting still require user review.
- Background removal can lose thin handles, retain a real hole as opaque background, or change a label, cap or colour. The prepared cases explicitly check those finite details; no natural-photo quality result is available.
- A checkerboard canvas screenshot is not proof of native PNG transparency. Verify the first downloaded artifact, actual alpha data and original dimensions.
- Official ordinary-file processing statements do not establish offline operation or confidentiality for every AI feature. The embedding API documents third-party AI configuration, while the present native route remains unknown.
- The current native AI model/build, provider, account or ad gate, credit allowance and pricing have not been observed. Dated documentation is not proof of the current interactive configuration.
- The two prepared cases are not executed. Pending import/AI approval, missing output or unfinished service work cannot be represented as a pass or an overall accuracy score.
- The 2017 individual-developer story is not current employee, ownership or legal-operator evidence.
- Source-image, logo, font and third-party-service rights still apply. The Photopea work-ownership statement does not grant rights to materials the user does not own.
- The entry does not establish autonomous store updates, social publishing, payments, batch throughput or a separate AI inference service. Browser embedding has a narrower documented scope.
Field-level unknowns identify gaps in this review. They do not imply the vendor lacks the capability.

Questions about Photopea
What is Photopea useful for?
Photopea is a browser image editor for preparing and editing images and design files. For an individual or small seller, its documented one-click Remove BG command can produce a cutout for later review and PNG export; layers, masks and PSD editing support broader layouts. It also advertises replacement from a text description. These are user-directed editing operations, and this profile establishes no autonomous business workflow.
Who created Photopea, and is it still a one-person project?
Ivan Kutskir's official post dated 14 December 2017 says he was the only developer at that time and describes creating the code, tool icons, blog and logo. The same post says he wanted to build a team. It supports an individual-developer origin; current team size, legal operator and controlling ownership are unknown here.
Is Photopea free, and can I sell work made with it?
The reviewed Terms Of Use allow free use for any purpose when Photopea offers the action without asking for payment. They say the user's work belongs to the user, may be sold without sharing proceeds and need not mention Photopea. Optional Premium is described as a time-limited one-time payment. No current Premium price or native AI allowance was verified; source materials and optional third-party AI services have separate rights and terms.
Do my images stay on my device when I use Photopea AI?
Official ordinary-editing documentation says opened files are processed on the device. That statement alone does not verify every AI operation: the embedding API documents optional Dezgo configuration for Magic Replace and Remove BG with a key and request URL. The current native command's processing route, provider and network behavior remain unknown. Inspect the actual feature notices before supplying a sensitive image.
Does Photopea have an API for my website?
The official API describes configuring and embedding the browser editor with a URL/iframe, optional files and resources, environment settings, scripts and a save-to-server destination. It also documents optional third-party AI configuration. This is browser embedding and editor configuration; this review does not establish a standalone Photopea AI inference endpoint, unattended batch service or store integration.
How do I make a transparent product cutout in Photopea?
The official 19 August 2024 tutorial says to open an authorized photo using File > Open, choose Select > Remove BG, then use File > Export As > PNG and save. Review current feature gates first. Compare the product outline, labels, colours, narrow features and holes with the original, then inspect the actual PNG. JPG does not retain transparent pixels, and a canvas checkerboard alone does not prove that the downloaded file is transparent.
Has uAgentKit tested Photopea?
No vendor-account performance test has been completed for Photopea; no Photopea product case has been executed in this profile. Two cases are frozen: a 512x512 synthetic bottle and a low-contrast mug with a thin handle and real hole. Each has six unchanged conditions covering the native first-result path, valid PNG/alpha, full silhouette, foreground coverage, transparent background or hole, and retained source colours. Approval for the specific image import and first free native Remove BG action is pending. No score, successful export or broad product-quality conclusion is available.
What should a creator or small seller inspect before using a Photopea result?
Compare the actual exported image with the original product: keep the cap, printed label, colour, thin handle and genuine holes, then verify the PNG's dimensions and alpha transparency. Save editable work when future changes are needed and check source-material rights. The planned pilot retains only each first unedited export, forbids repair and retries, and checks evaluator-only masks; even a future result on those synthetic fixtures would not establish performance on natural photos, hair, glass, shadows or an entire product catalogue.
